Volunteer Friend, The Friendship Program

Cape Abilities
Job Description
Part Time

The Cape Abilities Friendship Program seeks to build one-on-one social relationships between volunteer Friends and Cape Abilities program participants. The Program aims to enrich lives and improve the level of inclusion for both volunteers and participants. Volunteer Friends will be matched with participants from Cape Abilities programs with the expectation that they meet regularly and develop a friendship. Through shared interests and experiences, Friends combat loneliness and develop interpersonal skills, while gaining confidence and self-esteem.

The Volunteer Friend serves as a positive role model to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, autism, acquired brain injury or other unique challenges. Friends are expected to encourage development of life, social and recreational skills, and to develop long-term friendships similar to a Big Brother/Big Sister type relationship.

Flexible schedule. Will be expected to attend a virtual orientation and training program. The minimum commitment is one “visit” per month, either in person or virtually. Regular contact initiated by the volunteer is expected on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, by phone, video chat, text, email or other agreed method. Participation in group Friendship Program meet-ups is encouraged. Minimum length of Program participation is one year, but the hope is to establish long term relationships. During the pandemic, contact can be virtual as arranged between the Friends but is expected to be in-person when safe to do so.

High school diploma or equivalent required. Valid driver’s license in the state of Massachusetts required. Please email Volunteer@capeabilities.org to apply!
