Home Equity & Consumer Lending Underwriter

Summary:

Underwrites quality Home Equity and Consumer Loans in accordance with the Bank’s risk management criteria and regulatory compliance requirements; has final sign off and approval up to the level authorized by Bank policy.  Provides internal and external support and guidance to customers and team members to facilitate the application process.  

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

Underwriting

  1. Has thorough knowledge of all home equity and consumer loan products and stays abreast of any changes.
  2. Underwrites quality Home Equity and Consumer Loans (income analysis, credit review, asset review).
  3. Has sufficient knowledge of automated underwriting systems including loan applications originated through the Residential and Consumer Lending Internet Center.
  4. Makes recommendations directly to the Coordinator regarding more complex loans and exceptions.
  5. Has authority to approve all Home Equity and Consumer Loans up to a specified level.
  6. Underwrites loans within appropriate department guidelines.
  7. Understands computer underwriting applications and multiple loan operating systems within the department.
  8. Has strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.

Customer Service

  1. Provides assistance to the Retail Branch network and has direct interaction with Bank customers.
  2. Handles customer requests in a timely fashion without sacrificing underwriting standards.

Compliance

  1. Ensures compliance with Bank, Federal, and State regulations concerning Home Equity and Consumer Lending.
  2. Reviews and ensures file accuracy and completeness of appraisals, debt to income ratios, credit reports and scores, and loan to value ratios.

Qualifications:

Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent through specialized experience and training in lending, underwriting, and related subject.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Minimum of two years underwriting experience, preferably with residential and/or consumer loans.
  • Minimum of two years experience in banking, preferably in Residential Lending.
  • Extensive knowledge of underwriting guidelines and regulatory guidelines.
  • Strong computer knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in underwriting loans.
  • Must have cyber security awareness to protect the digital environment, the Bank, and customers.
