The Truro Treasures Festival hosts a trove of events from September 15th to the 17th. This year’s theme is Bounty of The Sea. Truro Treasures began in 1992 when several community members, most notably Betty Groom and Boo Houstoun, envisioned a fall weekend for children and adults to raise money to help save the Highland Lighthouse, and to promote community pride and interest in Truro. As a result, a non-profit organization named Truro Treasures was created to sponsor the event. Since then, Truro Treasures has evolved and expanded into an annual fall weekend event that is crammed full of activities. On Friday, September 15th, from 10am to 12 noon Pickle at the Pamet will be held at the Pamet Harbor Club. Pickleball enthusiasts can falafel, flapjack, and volley llama in a paddler’s paradise! Reel Deal Fishing Charters is generously sponsoring this event and Days Market and Deli will be supplying goodies to the contestants. On Friday, September 15th, from 4:00pm to 5:30pm the Highland House Museum will host a unique lecture entitled, “Nursery of Seamen and Fishermen – Pamet Harbor from 1830 to 1860”. The talk explores Truro's nautical history between 1830 and 1860 when the seas were extraordinarily bountiful for Truro mariners. The town was home to some of the most productive fishermen and respected sea captains in the country. Dozens of businesses on and around the busy wharves of Pamet Harbor supported the fishing and trading fleet. In 1836, 500 Truro men fished for mackerel and cod aboard 63 vessels, making the Pamet the fifth largest fishing harbor in Massachusetts. What was Pamet Harbor like in those years? What do we know about the business of fishing aboard Truro schooners? How did the town become such an important maritime center? What brought its era of seafaring leadership to an abrupt end? Tim Richards, who conducted the research and prepared the panels for the current Highland House exhibit on Pamet Harbor in the mid-19th century, will answer those questions and more in this opening talk of Truro Treasures 2023. On Friday, September 15th, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm a wealth of talent will be on full display at the Edgewood Farm Cocktail Party hosted by Truro Center for the Arts. The event is located at 3 Edgewood Way in Truro. This windfall will be "en plein air." Award winning artists affiliated with Addison Art Gallery will create valuable works as we celebrate Truro Treasures in the serene and lush setting of Edgewood Farm. Notable artists onsite creating masterstrokes include Maryalice Eizenberg, Jonathan McPhillips, Andrea Petitto, Paul Schulenburg, and On Saturday, September 16th, from 9am to 11am, test your sleuthing skills at the Truro Treasure Hunt. Piece together a series of clues while exploring some of the town’s historic sites. Assemble a team of 2-6 people (one car per team) and meet at the Highland House Museum to pick up your clues. Once you solve a clue, drive to its location, where you will find a letter. The letters will form an anagram that has significance to Truro. First and second place winners will receive a prize. To register your team, email Ellen English at ellenceiba@gmail.com. Pre-registration is not required but is encouraged. There is a suggested donation of $10 per car for this fun scavenger hunt. Proceeds to benefit the Truro Historical Society. On Saturday, September 16th, the weekend gets moving with a 5K Fun Run/Walk. The course begins at beautiful Pamet Harbor and ends at the magnificent Ballston Beach. T-Shirts generously donated by Savory & the Sweet Escape will be given to the first 75 entries (while supplies last).
