Cape Symphony will perform “The Magic of Mozart” on November 11 and 12 at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center. The program includes Overture to The Magic Flute, Selections from 12 German Dances, Piano Concerto No. 13, and Symphony No. 38 “Prague.” The orchestra will be led by Cape Symphony Concertmaster Jae Cosmos Lee. Renowned musician and scholar Sylvia Berry will play the Viennese fortepiano. The Magic Flute was Mozart’s last completed masterpiece. The overture is an energetic, vivacious piece. After its famously attention-grabbing opening chords, it proceeds briskly along as if at a playful gallop toward a grand, harmonious conclusion. Mozart composed and performed a tremendous amount of dance music for court parties. He loved to dance, and loved this kind of music. Selections from 12 German Dances is a delightful sampling of pieces he created for those festivities. Sylvia Berry has played Piano Concerto No. 13 in C major many times in small ensembles. “I’m really excited to play it with a full orchestra for the first time with the Cape Symphony,” she says. “The fortepiano will be a sound people might not be used to. You’ll hear the music as Mozart heard it, as he played it.” Symphony No. 38 “Prague” is thought to reflect Mozart’s most sophisticated symphonic style, covering a broad spectrum of contrasting emotions. Cape Symphony is proud to present The Magic of Mozart on November 11 and 12, 2023 at the Barnstable Performing Arts Center, 744 West Main Street, Hyannis.
